Do I need to purchase a Tanpura or a Harmonium?

  1. If you are enrolled into a vocal course, having a Tanpura or Shruti box is mandatory as it is important for you to practice singing in your own pitch.
  2. Tanpura apps are available for free on Google Play or Apple Store and give you the option to select your own pitch - you do not need to invest in a physical tanpura!.
  3. The OM Book™ also provides you with a tanpura that can be used while practicing, however, we recommend not to play the tanpura in your OM Book™ during a class as there will be a feedback effect that will diminish the class quality.
  4. You may use the free “Sur Sadhana App” by Shankar Mahadevan Academy. Sur Sadhana app is available for Android as well iOS
